Amadea (Mezzo-Soprano) is accompanied by Frederick on an authentic David's Harp, which was hand-made in Jerusalem. The David's Harp has been made in the same exact way as it would have been made 3,000 years ago in the time of King David. The performance took place live in the Sankt Marien-Liebfrauen Church on December 20, 2008. Bunting's book of Irish tunes is called "Ancient Music of Ireland." This is an "Unfinished Version" of the Irish ballad - "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen." Written by Thomas Paine Westendorf (1848-1923) for his wife, Jenny, who was born in Ireland. He was a very poor musician and they were living in America at the time, when he wrote this song. It became a "hit" in his day and they were able to use the money from the song's success to finally return to Ireland. "Haynt iz Purim" (Today is Purim) & "Shalakhmones" (Purim-Gifts) are two Yiddish Folksongs that catch the spirit of Purim. Purim is the Jewish Holiday, which celebrates a real event in History back at the time of the Persian Empire (6th Century BCE). Haman, the Royal Vizier of the King Ahasueros (Xerxes), cast lots to choose a Day, when to kill all of the Jews living in the Persian Kingdom at this time. At the last moment the Queen Esther was able to save her people and instead Haman was hung on the same gallows that he had built for his murderous plot. The lyrics of this Hebrew song were written by Ehut Manor and the music by Nurit Hirah. It was written before 1948, when Israel was still being ruled by the British. I sang this song in a concert on the second day of Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) in hopes that the year 5768 will be even better than last year for all of us. Songs from the Jewish New Year 5768 -- Ashrenu (Hebrew Prayer) Live Performance of the Hebrew prayer -- Ashrenu -- by Amadea (Mezzo-Soprano) and Jürgen Gottschalk (Accordion). The hebrew prayer -- Ashrenu -- comes from a section of the Morning Prayer Service known as the "Tikun Tefillah." The "Tikun Tefillah" was compiled during a period of intense persecution -- the middle of the 5th century, when the Jewish people were ruled by the Persian King, Yezdegerd II. He forbade the Jews to observe the Sabbath or to recite their central prayer -- The "Shema," since the "Shema" mentions the Hebrew word "Yisrael." "Yisrael" is the second name for the Hebrew Patriarch -- Jacob. This Hebrew word literally means -- "He triumphed over an angel." "Yisrael" itself is made up of two Hebrew words; the first word being ("Shirara" or mastery) combined with a second Hebrew word ("Yashar" or upright, fair) -- a dedication to justice in accordance with the Lord's will. The Persian King, Yezdegerd II, seems to have felt personally threatened by the Jewish religion and the Jewish people, in that "ideally" one of the main goals of Judaism is to fulfil divine justice by conquering the Angel of Darkness, just as Jacob had done in biblical times. Therefore, the Ashrenu prayer was written to help the Jewish people not be disheartened by their Persian oppressors. It is recited just before the "Shema" prayer. It is a reminder to the Jewish people that the Torah is their real heritage, and that its beauty can never be subdued or overthrown by anyone. Here is an English translation of the Ashrenu: "We are fortunate, how good is our portion, how pleasant our lot, and how beautiful is out heritage!" Every day of the year, except on the Sabbath and on the Jewish New Year -- Rosh Hashanah - these prayers of forgiveness (including Shemah Kolenu) are recited in the Jewish liturgy. On Yom Kippur -- the most holy day of the year for the Jewish people -- the Ark (where the Torah is kept) is opened for the entire recitation of the Selichot Service. The people, who are able to stand, do so for the entire service. Sometimes this service may last as long as one hour long. The composers of these supplications of the Selichot Service are among the most notable of Talmudic times. The central message of the Selichot Service lie in the thirteen attributes of "Divine Mercy." In other words, in accordance with Jewish tradition each sin committed by a person can actually be removed by an equal "good deed." Therefore, no sin (according to Jewish Law) is unforgivable, since G-d is greater than any sin that mankind is capable of committing. During this prayer -- Shemah Kolenu -- the Ark is opened and the entire congregation stands. The cantor sings with fervour and passion these words: ENGLISH TRANSLATION- "Hear our voice, Hashem, our G-d, have pity and compassion on us, and accept our prayer. Bring us back, Hashem, and we shall return to You, renew our days as of old. Hear our words, Hashem, perceive our thoughts. May they find favor -- the expressions of our mouth and the thoughts of our heart -- before You, Hashem, our Rock and our Redeemer. Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take from us the spirit of your holiness. Do not cast us away in the time of old age; forsake us not when our strength does fail us. Forsake us not, Oh Hashem, our G-d; be not distant to us"

Live performance of the "Kol Nidre" sung „a capella“ by Dorothea Fayne (Mezzo-Soprano) at the Heilandskirche in Berlin. The Kol Nidre is a Jewish prayer that is sung three times on the eve of the holiest day of the year, according to Jewish tradition - Yom Kippur. Talmudic sources explain that this prayer is the moment, when an individual asks for Divine forgiveness for being unable to fulfil the oaths that were made that year to the Lord himself. In Jewish tradition this is viewed as being even more serious than the oaths that have been left unfulfilled between people. The Kol Nidre prayer is recited by the Chazzan of the synagogue or by one of the two men, who are standing beside him. It serves as a formal declaration that the holiday -Yom Kippur- has officially begun and that all Jews should be allowed to join in the services no matter how grave may have been any of their transgressions. Here is an English translation of the Hebrew text: “All vows, prohibitions, oaths, consecrations, konam-vows (korban HEBREW; sacrifice or offering ENGLISH), konas-vows (the HEBREW substitute for G-d’s name), or equivalent terms, that we may vow, swear, consecrate, or prohibit upon ourselves from Yom Kippur that passed until this Yom Kippur, and from this Yom Kippur until the Yom Kippur in the world to come (or the next Yom Kippur), which is upon us for good. Regarding them all, we repudiate them. They all shall be undone, abandoned, cancelled, null, and void, not in force and not in effect. Our vows are no longer (valid) vows; our prohibitions are no longer (valid) prohibitions; and our oaths are no longer (valid) oaths...” (3x) Certainly, books could be written about the text of the Kol Nidre. It seems that the Kol Nidre prayer is an acknowledgement of the fact that in Judaism it is viewed that each person is held accountable for their actions (or for their passivity and inaction) during their lifetime. Through Prayer, Charity and true Repentance forgiveness from G-d can be achieved by all people. This is probably one of the main messages behind the chanting of the Kol Nidre prayer. This performance is dedicated to Jaqueline Du Pre – one of the greatest cellists ever to have lived.

"Non so più cosa son" is Cherubino's first aria from Act I of Mozart's opera - Le Nozze di Figaro (1786). The music is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; the libretto is by Lorenzo da Ponte (adapted from Beaumarchais' drama - Le Marriage de Figaro). The setting of this aria is the new, sparsely furnished bedroom of Susanna and Figaro. Cherubino enters to tell Susanna about his last bout with the Count. He was caught kissing Barbarina and now the Count Almaviva has threatened to expel him from the castle. In the middle of his complaining he sees a ribbon, which belongs to the Countess Rosina. He forgets all of his troubles at that moment, grabs the ribbon and gives Susanna a manuscript copy of one his songs – Non so più cosa son. In this song Cherubino proclaims his love for every woman he knows and his love for love itself... Here is an English translation of Cherubino’s wonderful aria – Non so più cosa son: “I don’t know anymore what I am, what I am doing; Now I am like fire, then I am like ice. Every woman changes my color, every woman makes my heart palpitate. Just the name love, delight, makes me turbulent, rises my chest, and love forces me to speak about a desire, a desire which I cannot explain. I talk about love when awake, I talk about love when dreaming, to the water, to the shadows, to the mountains, to the flowers, to the grass, to the fountains, to the echo, to the air, to the winds, which carry away from here the sounds of my vane accents. "A Summernight's Concert in Berlin" - June 17, 2007 A live Performance of the aria "Voi, che sapete" sung by Dorothea Fayne (Mezzo-Soprano), accompanied by Jens Holzkamp (piano). June 2007. "Voi, che sapete" is Cherubino's second aria from Act II of Mozart's opera - Le Nozze di Figaro (1786). The music is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; the libretto is by Lorenzo da Ponte (adapted from Beaumarchais' drama - Le Marriage de Figaro). The Opera takes place in the Castle of Count Almaviva near Seville in the 17th century. "Voi, che sapete" is sung by the page, Cherubino. Cherubino, a young man of about 16 or 17 years old, has learned in Act I that the Count Almaviva is going to send him to war as a soldier. But, Cherubino is in love with every woman of Count Almaviva's Court, including his wife - the Countess Rosina. He is not cut out to be a soldier, but rather a lover of all of the women... During this aria Cherubino has gone to the Countess' bedroom to speak to her and Susanna about his terrible plight. Susanna asks him to sing them one of his love songs. Cherubino forgets all about his sad story with the army and sings the beautiful aria, "Voi, che sapete" to the Countess while Susanna accompanies him on the guitar.

Live Performance of Franz Schubert’s “Heidenröslein” by Dorothea Fayne (Mezzo-Soprano) and Jens Holzkamp (Piano) from a concert that they gave on June, 17, 2007 – „A Summernight’s Concert in Berlin.“ In 1816 Joseph von Spaun sent sixteen of Schubert's songs with settings of Goethe's poems to the poet himself. The next month he sent Goethe another twelve songs by Schubert with Goethe's poems. Supposedly, Goethe made a short note of this in his diary, but did not react more. Some people have said that Goethe did not know much about music and that is why he acted this way. Others believe that because Schubert’s compositions may have changed or affected the poems of Goethe ever so slightly, that he was not perfectly happy with Schubert’s music... Nevertheless, Goethe’s opinions did not influence Schubert in the least. He set more than 80 poems of Goethe to music. “Heidenröslein” is one of Schubert’s most beautiful and most beloved of all his writings. It is also, by the way, one of the most difficult songs from Franz Schubert to sing well. This is because the vocal line lies plainly exposed over a clear, subtle harmonic structure, in which the piano part has never more than three or four voices at any given moment.
